Case Studies

Patient: female; 52 years old

1Presentation: Experiencing severe pain in the right shoulder and back for the past 6 weeks.

Treatment history: Patient developed severe pain of unknown origin in the paravertebral region, right side, at the level of the 1st and 2nd thoracic roots. She was injected with procaine and obtained relief for 2 hours.

Physician evaluation: There was marked tenderness to pressure on right side over the region of the 1st and 2nd thoracic roots. There was also tenderness to pressure in the region of the triceps and a small band of tenderness in the subclavicular region.

Resolution: Injection of the involved trunks gave relief for 5 days. Patient was discharged free of pain and without tenderness after the third injection. Patient continued to be free of pain and tenderness at three weeks post injection.
